Shaded Explorer - Between The Blue (2014)

Shaded Explorer - Between The Blue MP3 / FLAC

new album on Silent Season...

Shaded Explorer lives in a place where the music is hidden behind a dense fog and dreams are suffocated by an unpromising reality. This stimulates him to continue his research of magical places around the world, being them ethereal landscapes, deep cenotes or blue seas. In those places he discovered and created new sounds, melodies and rhythms that melted together create soundscapes for escape.

DMX Krew - 100 Tears - Bleep Exclusive Edition (2014)

DMX Krew - 100 Tears - Bleep Exclusive Edition MP3 / FLAC

Fundamental Records presents '100 tears' a brand new album from DMX Krew. This is a one off exclusive Bleep edition of 100 copies pressed on deluxe double white vinyl and housed inside a metallic cardboard jacket screen printed by hand by designer Alek Stark. Below are a few words from Ed DMX about the making of the album. These are nearly all tracks that were written at the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014 when I was in the process of moving house, which meant I couldn't have my studio set up. Instead I made these tracks using one or two synths and one drum machine, recording into a laptop without a mixing desk. I guess this is the way a lot of people make music but it's new to me. Having the restriction of only a few pieces of equipment on each track helped me to focus on musical ideas. When I felt too restricted by the machines in use, I would put a couple away and get a couple of different ones out of storage. So the whole thing has a slightly different production vibe than some of my stuff, and a slightly different thought process, but the inspiration is the same: science fact and fiction mixed with the emotions of daily life.

Lumen Drones - Lumen Drones (2014)

Lumen Drones - Lumen Drones MP3 / FLAC

The Norwegian instrumental trio Lumen Drones call themselves a "psychedelic drone band." The lineup pairs Norway's celebrated Hardanger fiddle player Nils Økland with guitarist Per Steinar Lie and drummer Ørjan Haaland of the Low Frequency in Stereo. The Hardanger is a traditional Norwegian folk instrument made of thinner wood than a violin. Four of its strings are set in standard tuning while four more are "sympathetic" or "understrings" — i.e. passive droning ones. Though the group claims Durutti Column and the Velvet Underground in their pool of influences, the one not listed is the one impossible not to hear: Australia's Dirty Three. Like their Down Under counterparts, the music is similarly orchestrated, and their compositions often open ended. But there are key differences too. The Hardanger's droning qualities add many harmonic, textural, and color dimensions to the palette. Lie is a sonically aggressive, experimental, and rhythmic guitarist while Haaland is a formalist rock drummer. Their sound is raw, live, slightly distorted, and heavily reverbed. Økland comes directly from the Norwegian folk tradition. His previous offerings on Rune Grammofon and ECM are rooted in lineage music. The 12-minute "Ira Furore" begins with a crescendo: Manically strummed open-tune chords, jagged, stinging six-string fills, furious rolling snares, and tom-toms create propulsion as the Hardanger wafts mournfully. A couple of minutes in, the layers peel off and a "song" emerges amid droning guitar and accented backbeats, as multi-tracked violins create several simultaneous melodies. Wah-wah pedals erupt in the margins, cymbals whisper in and out, a bassline rumbles, and space itself becomes a bridge of translation between instruments. In its last third, it's all-out stun, blurred colors, and brute force. "Echo Plexus" is clearly built on a folk melody with Økland playing a reel as a whirlpool of sound begins to develop. Lie's biting leads answer the fiddle while Haaland's tom-toms do a circular dance underneath, and eventually it becomes a full-fledged musical storm. "Keelwater" is slightly abstract and skeletal. Even so, it offers several tonalities at work in a modern song frame that lingers between folk and improvisation. The beginning of closer "Svartaskjær sounds as if the recording engineer only decided to hit "record" once things got cranking. Oscillating reverb and distortion color Økland's solos, while Lie's guitar and Haaland's kit create a hypnotic groove as the trio erects a whirling altar to darkly driven, post-psych rock — think Loop with a violin. With its loose, rugged, spontaneous feel, Lumen Drones might seem a curious choice for ECM, but not really; they've taken chances for nearly five decades. This trio's debut juxtaposes droning harmonics, labyrinthine melodies, and fluid yet dynamic force in a manner that openly reflects their influences while delivering an original take on them.

Pauline Oliveros, Timothy Hill & David Rothenberg - Cicada Dream Band MP3

2013 marked the arrival of millions of periodical cicadas to the New York Metropolitan area. These musical insects appear only once every seventeen years. On the occasion of this auspicious event, David Rothenberg performed a series of concerts together with composer and deep listener Pauline Oliveros, overtone singer Timothy Hill, and live singing insects brought in from the trees. The ensemble of digital accordion, clarinets with electronically enhanced nature sounds, and harmonic singing is certainly a trio unlike anything heard before. Even Pauline, with eighty-two years of music making, confessed she had not heard anything like it. The ensemble headed to the famous Dreamland Studios just outside of Woodstock to commit three and a half hours of music to digital memory. For the album they picked their favorite 64 minutes and 32 seconds. Joëlle Léandre said “I love this trio, it’s wonderful, special!”

Silk Rhodes - Silk Rhodes (2014)

Silk Rhodes - Silk Rhodes MP3 / FLAC

Birthed in the back alleys of Baltimore, nurtured by NYC, and ultimately coming of age on the highways of the Southwest on their way to California, Silk Rhodes is the dynamic duo of astro-travelling producer Michael Collins and singer Sasha Desree. Their voyage began in a 1997 Honda CRV turned DIY recording studio built to capture and share lightbulb moments as they happened. The approach was simple: run a microphone into loop pedal, connect the looper to the car stereo via cassette-tape adaptor, and start spitting out ideas. Then Collins and Desree, alongside a host of roving lunatics and pranksters, would broadcast their experiments to the streets, commenting on their observations in rhyme, soliciting ideas from strangers, and inviting people into the car to contribute vocals, or loop beats. These experiments include spawned sound collages and stream-of-consciousness hymns, as well an an electric boogie tune with nods to Joe Jackson and George Benson (Face 2 Face), and a lonesome ballad that sounds like a still-lost Donnie and Joe Emerson song produced by Gamble & Huff (Pains). Under the banner of Silk Rhodes, Collins and Desree challenge preconceived notions of what soul music is, can, and should be. Steeped in human experience, Silk Rhodes'' debut is a collection of songs that exemplifies their free spirited vision for future soul music.

Poppy Ackroyd - Feathers (2014)

Poppy Ackroyd - Feathers MP3 / FLAC

Poppy Ackroyd is a performer and composer from London, currently based in Brighton. Classically trained on violin and piano from an early age, she studied piano and composition at Edinburgh University before completing a masters degree in Piano Performance. A long-term collaborator with Hidden Orchestra (Tru Thoughts Records, Denovali Records), she also works with other musicians and artists, creating soundtracks for film, dance, physical theatre and radio. Her debut album 'Escapement' (Denovali Records, 2012) impressed with its delicate, intricate and beautifully atmospheric music, created using only piano and violin (with the exception of a few field recordings). In 2013 Poppy collaborated with visual artist Lumen to create bespoke films for her live performances. Demand from audiences led to a DVD of the music and visuals combined - 'Escapement Visualised' - being released in September 2014. November 2014 sees the release of her second full-length album 'Feathers', which she will be performing live across Europe in the months following the release.

James Ginzburg & Yair Elizar Glotman - Nimbes (2014)

James Ginzburg & Yair Elizar Glotman - Nimbes MP3

**Plush neo-classical/electro-acoustic soundtrack by Emptyset's James Ginzburg and fellow sound artist, Yair Elazar Glotman for Ginzburg's A/V collaboration with French artist, Joanie Lemercier. Includes versions by Glotman and Eric Holm** "Starting with actual footage of forests, cathedrals, deserts, and even volcanoes from around the world, Lemercier and Ginzburg then used 3D modeling and 2D photoscan imaging to alter and enhance the images, rendering them suitable for projection on a domed surface. The result is a dream-like combination of pointillism, photography, and astrological chart that weaves a creation story of sorts over the upturned faces of prone viewers. The soundtrack for Nimbes, performed by contrabassist Yair Glotman and percussionist Brandon Rosenbluth, was first recorded in an empty powerplant in Berlin, then mixed, edited and produced by Ginzburg in Bristol. A final mix was done in the projection dome at the Societe des Arts et Technologies, or SAT, in Montreal where the piece was inaugurally shown. In describing the piece, Lemercier refers to cosmogony, a theory which refers to the creation of both of the universe, and the "reality" of sentient beings. Nimbes takes on both expansions from the eye of an ambient observer - as the universe unfolds, as does human intelligence and man-made works upon the earth, a journey we witness in a non-linear melange of mysterious, iconic, light infused imagery."

Lia Ices - Ices (2014)

Lia Ices - Ices MP3

Singer-songwriter Lia Kessel, aka Lia Ices, returns with her new album, Ices, on September 16th via Jagjaguwar. The follow-up to 2011’s Grown Unknown was produced by Benny Sagittarius (a production team of Lia and her brother Eliot) with support from Clams Casino, and written during a particularly inspiring transitional period in Lia’s life. “When we started work on these songs, I was beginning a gradual move to California, constantly traveling back and forth from New York,” she explained in a press release. “I was experimenting. I was falling in love. Our studio in the Hudson Valley was full of electronics and computers and the sounds of future ships sailing through the vastness of space, and I sometimes forgot where I was. The first songs we wrote were called “flying 1″, then “flying 2″, and so on, which eventually evolved into songs on the album. Flight became a metaphor for the ignition of the imagination. The process created a lightness in me, a freedom and positive energy that I’d never before felt or explored.” Lia added, “Ices is a celebration of flight, levity, and the conviction that you can leave earth…You take wing in an airplane, you go to real places when you dream, you have out-of-body experiences, you get high, you lose yourself in someone else.”

Various Artists - Native North America (Vol.1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock & Country (1966-1985)

Various Artists - Native North America (Vol.1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock & Country MP3

Largely unheard, criminally undocumented, but at their core, utterly revolutionary, the recordings of the diverse North American Aboriginal community will finally take their rightful place in our collective history in the form of Native North America (Vol. 1): Aboriginal Folk, Rock, and Country 1966–1985. An anthology of music that was once near-extinct and off-the-grid is now available for all to hear, in what is, without a doubt, Light In The Attic’s most ambitious and historically significant project in the label’s 12-year journey. Native North America (Vol. 1) features music from the Indigenous peoples of Canada and the northern United States, recorded in the turbulent decades between 1966 to 1985. It represents the fusion of shifting global popular culture and a reawakening of Aboriginal spirituality and expression. The majority of this material has been widely unavailable for decades, hindered by lack of distribution or industry support and by limited mass media coverage, until now. You’ll hear Arctic garage rock from the Nunavik region of northern Quebec, melancholy Yup’ik folk from Alaska, and hushed country blues from the Wagmatcook First Nation reserve in Nova Scotia. You’ll hear echoes of Neil Young, Velvet Underground, Leonard Cohen, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash, and more among the songs, but injected with Native consciousness, storytelling, poetry, history, and ceremony. The stories behind the music presented on Native North America (Vol. 1) range from standard rock-and-roll dreams to transcendental epiphanies. They have been collected with love and respect by Vancouver-based record archaeologist and curator Kevin “Sipreano” Howes in a 15-year quest to unearth the history that falls between the notes of this unique music. Tirelessly, Howes scoured obscure, remote areas for the original vinyl recordings and the artists who made them, going so far as to send messages in Inuktitut over community radio airwaves in hopes that these lost cultural heroes would resurface. With cooperation and guidance from the artists, producers, family members, and behind the scenes players, Native North America (Vol. 1) sheds real light on the painful struggles and deep traditions of the greater Indigenous community and the significance of its music. The songs speak of joy and spirituality, but also tell of real tragedy and strife, like that of Algonquin/Mohawk artist Willy Mitchell, whose music career was sparked by a bullet to the head from the gun of a trigger-happy police officer, or those of Inuk singer-songwriter Willie Thrasher, who was robbed of his family and traditional Inuit culture by the residential school system. Considering the financially motivated destruction of our environment, the conservative political landscape, and corporate bottom-line dominance, it’s bittersweet to report that the revolutionary songs featured on Native North America hold as much meaning today as when they were originally recorded. Dedicated to legendary Métis singer-songwriter and poet Willie Dunn, featured on the anthology but who sadly passed away during its making, Native North America (Vol. 1) is only the beginning. A companion set featuring a crucial selection of folk, rock, and country from the United States’ Lower 48 and Mexico is currently in production.

Nebulo - Akzidens (2014)

Nebulo - Akzidens MP3 / FLAC

French electronic composer, Thomas Pujols, has compiled this 'cassette of cassettes' under his nebulo alias using nothing but sounds he could plunder from audio cassettes. The exercise wholeheartedly works, with nebulo presenting thirteen brief experiments compiled from a texturally rich variety of sounds rehomed from a multitude of disparate locations. There's plenty of beauty to be found in nebulo's constructions, with a gathering storm of plucked noises on opening prelude 'Fake Cadillac' or the Far-East flavoured wind loops on 'Canon', and perhaps most immediately on the tripped out choral samples that make up 'St. Fernand'. The loop used on the latter could go on almost indefinitely, decaying away like one of William Basinksi's epochal Disintegration Loops, but the dreamstate that nebulo finds himself in on akzidens isn't exclusively one resigned to languidness, and the apt theme of resurrection. From the hazy tape hiss of 'Rush' emerges a wholly surreal set of images underpinned by heartbeat like rhythms, while 'Dynasty Beef' stomps with furious beat-heavy energy. Nebulo's ability to reassemble the pieces from once separate jigsaws into new visionary musical entities in their own right is pretty astounding. While it's not quite another Dilla's Donuts the cut-and-paste method is too often resigned to either pure beatmakers, or absurd dada experimentalists, and nebulo is neither, both free from rhythmic confines, and meticulous in making sure the pieces truly belong together. In a field over encumbered with new electronic composers nebulo has already stood out via his previous releases on Hymen Records, and akzidens is the work of an artist continuing at the top of his game.

Purling Hiss - Weirdon (2014)

Purling Hiss - Weirdon MP3 / FLAC

Philadelphia alterna-fuzz trio Purling Hiss' 2013 album Water on Mars was a collection of '90s-styled pop hooks buried in layers of alien guitar tones and other types of extraterrestrial obscurity. Bandleader/songwriter/singer/guitarist Mike Polizze's tunes on that record zigzagged between alienated grunge-pop, slightly psychedelic folk-leaning dirges, and all-out attacks of abrasive guitar rock, always channeling the ghost of one patron saint of '90s slackerdom or another. Much like Water on Mars, Purling Hiss' 2014 follow-up, Weirdon, manages to recall moments of early indie rock magic without losing the unique core of numbed bliss and erratic weirdness that centers Polizze's songwriting. Some songs here still bear the same heavy influence of more dazed and confused alternative poster boys like the Lemonheads, the Replacements, and Nirvana in their shaggier moments, but there's a more sophomoric feel to Weirdon. Album opener "Forcefield of Solitude" seamlessly marries the carefree melodic simplicity and dazzled speak-singing of early Pavement with the melancholic dreaminess and guitar warping of Sonic Youth or Dinosaur Jr. Somewhere in the song Polizze manages to show how much all those bands took from the rolling rhythms of early college rockers like the Clean or the Feelies. There's a bit more humor here, too, on the oddball psychedelic effects of "Sundance Saloon Boogie" and the Vaselines-modeled noise pop weirdness of "Where's Sweetboy." Elsewhere, Polizze taps into the more sunbaked folk side of things that has popped up throughout his always shifting catalog, offering John Fahey-esque open-tuned interludes as well as "Reptili-a-genda," mirroring the same slacker blues that made Beck's One Foot in the Grave some of his best (and strangest) work. Weirdon feels more lighthearted than its predecessor, offering just as many aggressive guitar freakouts and blasts of antagonistic noise, but handing them over this time with a smirk instead of a scowl.

Throwing Snow's latest single ‘Avarice’ is the opening track from his powerful 'Mosaic' LP. Beginning with discordant, layered strings and a heady drone, a sparse beat propels it forward, heavy with atmosphere and mood. The release also features hard-hitting VIP versions of ‘Avarice’ and ‘As You Fall’, the latter featuring London-based songwriter and visual artist Py, which were developed for the dancefloor as Throwing Snow took his live show around the world. Finally, Will Saul & Komon offer up a remix of ‘Hypnotise’, with Kid A’s vocals swirling around a dark, propulsive beat. Following a stint at the Red Bull Music Academy and experimental releases on his own Snowfall and Left Blank imprints, Tones stepped out as Throwing Snow to release the Pathfinder EP on Houndstooth last spring, drawing universal praise from the likes of the Guardian, SPIN, XLR8R and Mixmag to name a few, before building on that success with his critically acclaimed inaugural full-length 'Mosaic', an immaculate, immersive collage of songs.

**Electronic pop and ambient electronica from a trio of Denmark's most trusted producers, Anders Remmer (Dub Tractor), Jesper Skaaning (Acustic), Thomas Knak (Opiate) aka Future 3, joined by vocalists Benoit Pioulard and Anja T. Lahrmann** "Future 3 return with an album of airy, ethereal-yet-epic compositions that both nod to the trio's nineties roots but also take in all the various musical experiments, ventures, and releases that have seen the light of day since 2001. The band's first album in 13 years, With and Without inhabits, as the title indicates, two different kinds of sonic realms: The "With" part refers to a series of song-based pieces Remmer, Skaaning, and Knak recorded with album guests Thomas Meluch (better known as Benoît Pioulard) and Anja T. Lahrmann (Ice Cream Cathedral); "Without" in turn, points to the other half of the album, comprised of instrumental, ambient-sounding pieces written and recorded without guest contributions. Ranging from shape-shifting and sweet-voiced electro pop nuggets ("Roller Coasters") to majestic, ambient snippets ("Fair"), from playfully pounding instrumental tracks ("Camphor") to crisp beat wizardry ("Trmbns"), With and Without combines instrumental and vocal tracks, proper song structures and rather loose, open-form soundscapes, marking a cinematic and sonically diverse return after the prolonged hiatus."

Sad City - Introduction To Lisboa / Sloe MP3

Following up from the stunning ‘You Will Soon Find That Life Is Wonderful’ 12” on Phonica’s Special Edi- tions imprint, Sad City returns to the label with his new EP ‘Introduction To Lisboa/ Sloe’. Glasgow-based producer Gary Caruth has evolved a highly original sound; deep, lush and widescreen electronics, from melancholic to ecstatic. Sonically, he continues where his last record left off and feels like the perfect companion to that well-received debut for Phonica. The record as a whole is composed of field recordings, with the basis for the first half of the EP, ‘Introduction to Lisboa,’ utilising sound recorded in and around Lisbon. He explains, “I wanted the music and field recordings to meld at times, to obscure what was conventionally the musical element and what were field recordings, blurring the line between found sound and composition in the creation of a whole other.” Opening track ‘Introduction To Lisboa’ builds and builds from near silence to a cacophony of field record- ings and looped horns. It melds into ‘Baixa Saxaphone’, where carefully paced percussion patiently enters over a wash of synth. From then on a delicate balance of restrained percussion and spine-tingling atmos- pherics interplay before descending into a blissful outro.

Pip Proud - A Fraying Space MP3

pip proud, sui generis, could be considered an australian outsider, with his untutored and uninhibited singing style, his primal guitar playing, his resolutely personal vision captured on recordings from 1967 to the early 70s - except that, unlike most outsiders, he was loved and accepted, with two of his three album releases on a major label, with frequent televisionappearances and coverage in music magazines. heralded in his native land though he was, he maintained a low profile from the early 70s, never made an impact overseas, and hisrecordings have been difficult to access. this collection has been selected by proud's biographer david nichols and will engender a new appreciation of proud's music. considered by some as a sort of antipodean syd barrett, listeners will hear that pip was clearing his own private and primal path, more poet than pop star, despite the media attention. other than one velvets-style band track, all songs here feature pip solo, some with appealingly primitive overdubs. fans of ramshackle oddball weirdo portastudio lofi bedroom pop of the 80s, 90s and beyond, whether of the nz, uk or us varieties, will find a precursor here.

Guerilla Toss - Smack The Brick (2014)

Guerilla Toss - Smack The Brick MP3 / FLAC

If you attended a shitty basement party thrown by reasonably hip people at almost any point during George W. Bush's first term, there's a good chance you saw a band that sounded a lot like Boston five-piece Guerilla Toss. Entertainment! was most likely on the stereo, someone was wearing a raggedy, technicolor Brian Chippendale mask, and there was probably a guy walking around with his dick hanging out. While it's been some time since anyone's uttered the words "dance punk" in any valuable context, Guerilla Toss seem hell bent on stirring up a noisy revival that's more no wave than new wave. Channeling everything from the fractured funk of pre-Echoes Rapture, Black Dice's anti-grooves, and the tinnitus-beckoning mania of Lightning Bolt, their latest LP Gay Disco is a freak-flag waving love letter for a time when the weirdos learned to stop worrying and love getting down in as awkward a fashion as possible. For an album that sounds as haphazard and caustic as Gay Disco does, each instrument seems designed to play a very specific role. Eschewing a traditional sense of tunefulness, Guerilla Toss bring the back of the band to the fore, relying on Simon Hanes' skronked-out bass and drummer Peter Negroponte's everything-but-the-kitchen-sink thrash to do most of the heavy lifting. Arian Shaifee's guitar (and Ian Kovac's synth work, for that matter) seems like an afterthought most of the time, operating like a sound effects machine rather than an object capable of creating melody (on "Operate", it calls to mind a wounded seal pup helplessly honking for its mother). But the most noteworthy instrument of all might be Kassie Carlson's vocals, that range between a tuned-up Kathleen Hanna and, as most are quick to notice, Molly Siegel of Ponytail. Despite how unintelligible her squawking might be, there's an invigorating brattiness that, in a small way, is welcomingly reminiscent of those now-defunct Baltimore art-punks. If the title wasn't any sort of a giveaway, it's clear that Gay Disco is a record that encourages movement, no matter how spastic it may be. When Guerilla Toss find reliable stretches of groove, like on single "Pink Elephant" (an abrasive take on early Gang Gang Dance), it's easy to enjoy Gay Disco as a functional expression of wiggy, wild energy. Even the nauseous, acidic "Operate" feels tailor-made to accompany the undulations of a drunken marionette. But Gay Disco ultimately operates like a series of clumsily threaded distractions, constantly trying to prove its irreverence with vertigo-inducing tempo changes and abrasion for the sake of abrasion. Where a band like Ponytail were able to coax beauty, color, and catharsis out of the wreckage, Guerilla Toss' similarly clamorous approach registers as almost gimmicky. Heralded for their energetic live shows, it's likely Gay Disco translates much better in person, able to finally make good on its intent to be simultaneously punchy and debilitating. But in the comfort of your own headphones, it's migraine-inducing even at a half hour, a record that should be the furthest thing from your reach even during the mildest of hangovers. To say that it's all a bit much would be an understatement, but neglecting to embrace that on some level would be to miss the point entirely. And still, something here registers as hollow, as Gay Disco is more a test of patience than an example of eccentric fun.

Not Waving - Voices II (2014)

Not Waving - Voices II MP3

Currently hitting a golden streak of releases, Alessio Natalizia of Walls ushers out a 2nd volume of synaesthetically-attuned, motorik electronica as Not Waving. As with Volume I, he again weaves inspiration from Oliver Sacks, Ivan Pavlov, B.F. Skinner and "the enduring relation between perception, memory, attention and comprehension" into minimal, stealthily emotive abstractions nodding as much to early Radiophonic pioneers as Italian Library records and early minimal wave explorers. What sets him apart from reams of others operating int his quadrant is a well timed sense of discipline and momentum, never outstaying his welcome and constantly keeping our attention with subtle variations, quicksilver turns of phrase and crude but effortlessly effective melodic progressions helmed by tape-lagged grooves. RIYL ambient AFX, Ekoplekz, BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

Not Waving - Voices I (2014)

Not Waving - Voices I MP3

Alessio Natalizia ov Walls meditates on the fidelity of memory and synaesthetic perception with his third release as Not Waving. Taking inspiration from neurologist Oliver Sacks, the philosophy and thinking of B.F. Skinner, and the research of Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov (not CoH), 'Voices I' spans seven hazily hypnagogic pieces of chattering drum machine pulses and groggy synths threaded and embedded with tape-manipulated field recordings challenging the listeners sense of space and place with intra-dimensional, extra-textural ambiguity. It makes a virtue of the uncanny spaces between his various hardware "voices" and the way we sense and feel their shapes, timbres and textures in a 2D environment. Or to put it another way, it's trippy sh*t for fans of vintage Italian industrial experiments and the likes of Thought Broadcast. Highly Recommended.

Cult of Youth - Final Days (2014)

Cult of Youth - Final Days MP3 / FLAC

For their third full-length for Sacred Bones, Cult of Youth have delved deeper into their style of punk-influenced psychedelic neofolk and created a self- described “post-industrial Pet Sounds.” Using acoustic and electronic instruments, found sounds and an extensive tribal rhythm section, Cult of Youth have put it all out on the table and left us with their magnum opus. The band has returned with a renewed sense of enthusiasm and an all-new lineup. Sean Ragon, once the project’s lone member, is now flanked by Jasper McGandy on bass and Christian Kount on electric guitar (both of whom were members of seminal Sacred Bones band The Hunt). Cory Flannigan on drums and Paige Flash on cello complete the five-piece. The end result is Cult of Youth as they were always meant to sound. The contributions of the new members are evident on every track on Final Days, from the anthemic “Empty Faction” to the gorgeous album closer “Roses.” Final Days is the culmination of everything Cult of Youth has been moving towards the past seven years — post-industrial, post-punk, and post-enlightenment. Addendum: Real human bones were used on this recording and a portion of the lyrics were written in jail.

Kristin Hersh - Hips and Makers (1994)

Kristin Hersh - Hips and Makers FLAC

In 1994, Kristin Hersh took a sabbatical from her beloved and beleaguered Throwing Muses to record her first solo album, Hips and Makers. Mostly acoustic, entirely personal, Hips' songs touch the core of Hersh's daily life, specifically as it involves her husband and family, topics she rarely explored with her band. Produced by ex-Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye, Hips and Makers infuses the singer/songwriter tradition with a jolt of complexity and authority. Hersh still favors the taut, stream of consciousness lyrics she whittled down to the bone with the Muses, but she never veers into confessional "dear diary" territory, although she does allow peeks into a world where clotheslines, bee stings, and the occasional ghost aren't unusual. Musically more measured and clearly quieter than any Muses disc, Hips showcases Hersh's fluttery voice atop powerful acoustic guitar with flourishes from cello and piano. "Your Ghost," the album's moody and dazzling opener, features backup vocals by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and sets the tone for the album: like a family, it's happy on the surface, intriguing when explored.
