Vakula - Voyage To Arcturus (2015)

Vakula - Voyage To Arcturus MP3

Ukranian house mystic Mikhaylo Vityk returns with a suitably epic new Vakula LP, A Voyage To Arcturus, issued through his own Leleka label. Those with a more considered grasp of literary matters will no doubt recognise that Vityk has taken titular inspiration from A Voyage To Arcturus, the 1920 novel penned by Scottish writer David Lindsay with each of the sixteen tracks also named after chapters from the book too. By his own admission, this is more of an imaginary soundtrack than outright album, and as a result there is little here one could call deep house. Spending some time with it does however confirm what a singular talent the Ukrainian is!

Kenn Starr - Square One (2015)

Kenn Starr - Square One FLAC

Kenn Starr sees his career at square one, despite being regarded among the elite of the DMV scene, and being in the inner circle of producers Oddisee and Kev Brown, and having his newest album signed to Mello Music Group. Eight years since his debut, Starr Status, Kenn Starr is baggage free on his sophomore album, Square One. Largely produced by Kev Brown with a nice block of production by Black Milk, and additional work by 14KT, Roddy Rod, and Kaimbr, Square One is Kenn Starr getting back to his foundation to begin anew. Square One is the only album Kenn Starr could write in order to bid farewell to days past and move forward. The album is built from the underground-up as Starr still writes from the mindset of being a product of the basement.

Kreng - The Summoner (2015)

Kreng - The Summoner MP3 psw: NOL / FLAC

We’ve been waiting for this one for a while - one of the most talented and overlooked composers in the death-ambient/invisible soundtrack realm finally returns with a petrifying suite of doom-laced string compositions on this excellent new album for Miasmah; 'The Summoner'. In the course of three albums and handful of shortform releases, Pepijn Caudron has become a byword for Bosch-like visions of a soundtrack-quality calibre. It's perhaps a little odd that his music hasn't yet been used to score some ultra-bleak, mittel European horror flick (far as we're aware), but that's also partly where our fascination begins - his often near-silent aesthetic and the absence of associated imagery other than his striking sleeve art always prompts imaginative investment from the listener. In this void, he uses silence and volume dynamics as an uncannily effective tool to dismantle and probe the recipient, leaving us little to grasp onto other than the murmur of our thoughts, and the implications of his own internal dialogue. When we consider that 'The Summoner' is based around 5 stages of mourning, and was prompted by the death of several close friends, its gravity becomes almost chokingly impending. As the first Kreng album to entirely eschew samples in favour of 12 string players, it's also testament to his vision and fortitude that his ideas translate so directly and powerfully to the acoustic realm. Manifest in the nauseous rush of Ligeti or Gaber-like discord in 'Anger', and the downward-spiralling knot of strings in 'Depression', whereas the fifteen minute title track displays a a more brooding resolve with the accompaniment of doom band Amenra's slow, ravaging guitars, organ and drums giving way to his own, personal sixth stage of icy reflection with 'Acceptance'. An incredible album this, well worthy of your darkest, most sleep deprived listening sessions.

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Playing the Piano & Out of Noise (2009)

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Playing the Piano & Out of Noise MP3 / FLAC

Ryuichi Sakamoto's legions of fans will have a new special 2-CD package to savor on September 28th (Decca Label Group): the two albums, playing the piano and out of noise, present a wide-ranging view into the world of this composer, musician, producer, actor, and environmental activist. The first CD, playing the piano, is a series of miniatures or "self-covers," as Sakamoto refers to them - solo piano versions of his earlier works, including some of the famous film themes such as The Last Emperor (Oscar/Grammyr -winning soundtrack), Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence and The Sheltering Sky (Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score). The second CD, out of noise, is arguably Sakamoto's most ambitious to date in which he continues to explore the netherworld between music and noise that has fascinated him for years. He is joined here by, among others, Austrian guitarist/laptop artist Christian Fennesz, guitarist Cornelius (Keigo Oyamada), England's renowned early music group Fretwork, and Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Skuli Sverrisson.

DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid - Songs Of A Dead Dreamer (1996)

DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid - Songs Of A Dead Dreamer MP3 / FLAC

Arguably but understandably, the amount of hype and academic discussion surrounding DJ Spooky's work has often obscured his gifts and abilities. Strip away everything, even his own detailed essays and reflections on his work that form this disc's liner notes, and what's left is creative and mysterious work that stands up well on its own merits. Not as sui generis as some would have him be — his roots in everything from avant-garde classical music to the groundbreaking work of Jamaican dub are clear — he's a marvelous synthesizer of varying trends, as Songs of a Dead Dreamer demonstrates throughout. The "illbient" tag is one of the more facile labels applied to his work; the intent is there (uneasy hip-hop rhythms in ambient space), but not the true range of what he is capable of. Instead, Songs for a Dead Dreamer is more a consistent and total exploration of sound and atmosphere, as much indebted to the effect of film soundtracks as it is to getting a good groove and beat on, and more. "Juba," with its haunting string sample floating through the hissing, low mix, or the distinctly dub-tinged "Anansi Abstrakt," one of many such tracks on the album showing that touch, are but two highlights of many. His DJing skills themselves aren't as prominent as are his abilities to arrange and create overall pieces, but when he lets the former through more, as with the key central scratch on "Galactic Funk (Tau Ceti Mix)," it's all for the service of further improving the song. Said song also has some righteous synclavier action, confirming that it's not just music to relax to.

Mittland Och Leo - Optimists (2015)

Mittland Och Leo - Optimists MP3 psw: NOL

This is so good! 'Optimists' is the enchanting debut album of rustling drum machines and diaphanous, bittersweet synth lines by Joke Desmet and Milan Warmoeskerken, aka Mittland och Leo. Equal parts Broadcast-like twee exotica and Suicide-style motorik funk, it also holds up very neatly next to like-minded missions from Not Waving, Moon Wheel or early, ambient AFX, hitting the sweetspot of smart simplicity with every turn. There's little arguing that this is a very well-trodden area of electronic music, but Mittland och Leo's sense of tactility and spellbinding melodic arrangements are just timelessly effective, from the systolic pulses which keep 'Earth Beat' bobbing along its melancholy trajectory, to the somehow rugged yet beautifully elegant shuffle of 'Domino', and definitely 'Decades'' clear-skied flight. This is the sorta once-in-a-while gem that you don't pass over - a massive recommendation to followers of Ghost Box, Woo, Isan.

Various Artists - Cold Waves Of Color (2014)

Various Artists - Cold Waves Of Color MP3 psw: NOL

Must-have collection of English post-punk rarities, sourced from the legendary Color Tapes label, remastered by Denis Blackham, all presented on vinyl for the first time! Emerging from that incredibly influential wormhole that opened somewhere between the late '70s and mid '80s, the Color Tapes (subsequently Color Discs) label was the brainchild of Gary Ramon, who, inspired by the Fxxk Off Tapes and Weird Noise labels, and attendance at an early Depeche Mode show, was prompted to start the label as an outlet for his own music and a like-minded gaggle of miscreants with drum machines, 4-track recorders, and an urge to make. It's highly likely that these tracks have been barely heard beyond their original 100 edition tape pressings in the early '80s, and thusly this is a bit of treasure trove, especially when considering the quality of the remasters, making the likes of Beserk In A Hayfield's bare bones disco wreckers, 'Tease' and 'Code', or the shuddering, ascetic coldwave of Disintegrators' 'Beyond Reason' bite sharper than ever. This is the reelest deal for people into Minimal Wave, Dark Entries, OG wave music. Don't sleep!

Else Marie Pade - Electronic Works 1958-1995 (2014)

Else Marie Pade - Electronic Works 1958-1995 MP3 psw: NOL / FLAC

Wow this is a stunner. Else Marie Pade’s ‘Electronic Works 1958-1995′ is a truly precious survey of a lone, pioneering voice in electronic music. Born in Aarhus, Denmark, in 1924, Else created the first piece of electronic music played on Danish radio, ‘Syv Cirkler (Seven Circles)’, marking the early development of an (up until now) largely hidden body of work inspired by her experiences while interred at a Nazi prison camp as a teenager, and subsequent studies with Pierre Schaffer and Karlheinz Stockhausen in the following years. To date she’s mostly remained an outpost unto herself, save for Dacapo Records efforts in the ’00s with the ‘Et Glasperlespil’ CD – and some remixed arrangements in ‘Face It’, plus a handful of compilation appearances, before Jakob Kirkegaard stepped up to work with her on the collaborative ‘Svævninger’ album and curate ‘Electronic Works 1958-1995′. These are her most important works; a microcosmos of plangent bleeps and spectral tones illuminated by her inner moonlight. The most obvious comparison is with Daphne Oram, who, at the same time was conjuring her very own electronic worlds from imagination and engineering, and also manifesting a sense of quiet wonder and trepidation towards the world in her compositions. As she explains: “The sounds outside became concrète music, and in the evening I could imagine that the stars and the moon and the sky uttered sounds and those turned into electronic music.” This set is arguably one of the most evocative, enchanted examples of early electronic music we’ve encountered yet – another totally immersive find from Important Records.

All We Are are a global gathering made up of Ireland’s Richard O’Flynn (drums, vocals), Norway’s Guro Gikling (bass, vocals) and Brazil’s Luis Santos (guitar, vocals). They met at university in Liverpool, England. Their self titled debut was written in a cabin in the isolated Norwegian mountains, with follow-up sessions in a secluded cottage in North Wales. Then the album was finished in their studio in a disused school in Liverpool with producer Dan Carey (Bat For Lashes, M.I.A, Hot Chip).

Reighnbeau - Hands MP3

Bryce Hample's songwriting experiments as Reighnbeau have always approached traditional composition and arrangement from unconventional angles, producing music with a pure immediacy that feels familiar while escaping comparison. On “Hands,” Hample complements the hushed whisper of his trademark vocals with a blend of lush, organic instrumentation sealed off from the world within an electronic suit of glitchy, orchestral static. Glistening guitar chords swell like whalesongs and bend like wind whistling through trees while synthesized noise crunches in sync to the primal pound of drums.

Ariel Kalma - An Evolutionary Music - Original Recordings 1972-1979 (2014)

Ariel Kalma - An Evolutionary Music - Original Recordings 1972-1979 MP3 psw: NOL

**Stellar collection of worldly new age and spiritual composition. RIYL Terry Riley, La Monte Young, and Charlemagne Palestine** "An Evolutionary Music (Original Recordings: 1972 – 1979) compiles unreleased recordings from the archives of multiversal artist Ariel Kalma. Concerned as much with musicality as spiritual facility, Kalma’s work vibrates aside fellow travelers along the great rainbow in curved air of the 1970s avant-garde. Ariel Kalma’s boundary-blurring electronic music is heard here in radiant detail across a selection of work spanning his early free-jazz and spoken word trips to his infinite modular synthesizer and analogue rhythm machine meditations. Kalma’s story is one of world travel, musical discovery and ego-abandonment. Yet for an artist who often discarded public recognition in favor of the ascetic truths in music making, An Evolutionary Music offers the imprint of an outright auteur."

Alessandro Alessandroni - Industrial (2015)

Alessandro Alessandroni - Industrial MP3 / FLAC

Holy Grail territory here from Andy Votel and Demdike’s mighty Dead Cert imprint - here finally bringing you this incredible album of previously unreleased Industrial-themed recordings made in 1976 by experimental pioneer and Ennio Morricone cohort Alessandro Alessandroni. The concept itself is riveting enough: the guy who provided that infamous guitar riff for 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' providing utterly bent and synth-heavy recordings previously unheard by the wider world - but the material and execution is just nothing short of a revelation, unlocking an uncannily prescient suite of rhythmik pieces that sound unlike much library music you will have heard from the era. ‘Industrial’ perfectly encapsulates the heightened state of creativity in the mid '70s surrounding Alessandroni and his close peers Giuliano Sorgini - together known as Braen Raskovich - and Ennio Morricone, for whom Alessandro also famously whistled the theme to 'A Fistful of Dollars’. Recorded at Piero Umiliani's Sound Workshop in Rome, and made with an arsenal of EMS Synthi VCS3 modular systems, tape loops and a treated Petrof grand piano plus a bundle of string instruments, the 'Industrial' results (coincidentally issued the same year as Throbbing Gristle's debut album) present a pulsating take on this kind of music breaching tightly-coiled motorik systems and mood percolators with atonal strings and viral oscillations. Most importantly, the sense of minimalist efficiency and the clarity of the recordings are shocking, pushing the envelope of electro-acoustic music and pre-empting the early notions of an entire genre movement. It’s taken an age to make this release happen - but here it finally is in all its remastered glory, including artwork by Anthony Shallcross and liner notes by Shallcross Jr, aka Andy Votel.

Debashish Bhattacharya - Calcutta Slide-Guitar (2005)

Debashish Bhattacharya - Calcutta Slide-Guitar MP3

Debashish Bhattacharya, rapidly gaining fame for his amazing abilities on the slide guitar after some well-publicized performances with Bob Brozman, among others, is also known for his innovative instrument design. This album focuses on his "Trinity of Guitars," three of his favorite designs that revolve around a common link between generations of music while remaining entirely different. The album starts out with a short composition based in "Raga Mishra Shiva Ranjani" on the small anandi, a slide ukulele that gives Bhattacharya the ability to show off the speed of his picking style. A longer exploration of "Raga Tilak Kamod" is done with the Ghandarvi guitar, created to sound like a guitar, a veena, and a sarangi depending on how it's played. The finale is notable for his abilities. For the ultimate in complexity, however, the final three pieces are based in "Raga Basant Mukhari," run off a high-speed teental, and use the Chaturangui guitar, a 22-string behemoth with sympathetic strings, chickaree strings, and a tone reminiscent of the Hawaiian slide. Bhattacharya explores the raga thoroughly, giving the old masters a run for their money. For guitar aficionados and Indian classical aficionados alike, this one's worth a spin or three.

Luigi Nono - Seguente MP3 / FLAC

Incredible collection of mid-late 80’s experimental works from the hugely influential Italian avant-garde composer Luigi Nono, including works for contrabass flute, clarinet, treated voices, strings and electronics. Beautiful boxed edition from the always-excellent Editions RZ. Rigid boxset containing 2 x CDs in gatefold slipcases with extensive 56-page booklet of essays and photographs** Editions RZ present a necessary reissue of their 1990 LP release, now backed with three legendary recordings, 'La Terra E La Compagna', 'Caminantes', 'No Hay Caminos, Hay Que Caminar'. Collected, they form a great access point to Luigi Nono's unique, carefully realised, yet unfathomably vast world, one equally informed by avant-garde musical studies and his commitment to socialism. In the best possible sense, it's very difficult to accurately sum up the sounds inside, other than in terms of a visceral, haptic approach and stunning spatial awareness. Highly recommended.
