Reso - Pulse Code (2014)

Reso - Pulse Code FLAC

After shattering the world's dancefloors on Civil Music, Reso returns to Hospital with four more incredible journeys to the furthest realms of the bass cosmos. "Sprite City" is 100 per cent drama as we ride the crest of the Hudmo synth rainbow well into the next century. "Unexist", meanwhile, flips back to the mid 90s D&B jungle heyday thanks to its sharp two-step rhythm and Metalheadz-style tears and sneers. Elsewhere "Pulse Code" jitters with footwork flavoured funk and "Break Em" hits hard with a sizzling glitch hop groove. Four contrasting jams all packed together with muscular production consistency, Reso has smashed this well and truly out of the Hospital parking lot. Essential!

Lushes - What Am I Doing (2014)

Lushes - What Am I Doing MP3/mirror / FLAC

Lushes are a band born of tensions – between art and math, order and chaos, planning and chance. You can hear it in their songs – taut, twitching art-punk that balances anxiety and elation, often within the space of a few bars. This is push-pull music, songs that temper the jagged fitfulness of groups like June of 44 and Slint with the soft-focus sweetness and open-ended song structures of The Sea & Cake and The Notwist. That moods so diametrically opposed can peacefully coexist is part of Lushes’ mystery and allure. This duality extends to the group's background. Their personalities were different – James was outspoken and gregarious, Joel introverted and reserved. Guitarist and vocalist James Ardery grew up pillaging his father's record collection, getting turned on to Nirvana and Wu-Tang Clan by his older brother, and attending hardcore shows by pioneering bands like Fugazi at the age of 12. Drummer Joel Myers started listening to composers like Rachmaninoff and Bach from age 11 after finding classical CDs lying around the house from his father, a classically trained organist. He spent years teaching himself classical piano along with several other instruments, and only started playing drums a year before Lushes began, when he came into owning a drum kit by chance. The fusion of their disparate influences is what animates Lushes – the anarchy of punk and hardcore colliding with the precision of a classical background to create music that is marvelously ordered while still feeling seconds away from detonation. That tension pulses throughout What Am I Doing, the group's warring influences making for music that feels brittle and vital. Album opener "Harsh" glides along slowly, feeling like a moody and measured art-rock meditation until you zero in on the words in the chorus: "Harsh on my ears, that's the way I like it." "One Right Word" is as coiled as a rattlesnake, clattering drum patterns colliding with a lockstep bass loop, its lyrics ominous as prophecy. The music drops out in time for an unsettling refrain: "Is the ship gonna sink? I don't know, it's getting deep." "Traffic," the first song the duo wrote together, volleys from a lurching, stop-start guitar pattern to a woozy, waking-nightmare middle section thick with howling feedback before accelerating into a panicked, feverish finale, pinwheels of guitar circling dizzily, eerie soprano voice singing from the shadows. That song provided the template for their songwriting approach: dense, grinding tracks built from dozens of interlocking parts, each song’s mood and tone changing without warning. "Garden," a dysfunctional love song that opens with a thicket of backwards-looped piano, is a masterpiece of sustained mood, James's vocals drifting like fog across the night sky. What Am I Doing was produced by their good friend Annabel Alpers, better known as Bachelorette (Drag City), and she expertly controls the group's varying moods. As James explains, "I want people to think, 'Wait, this is loud and guitar-heavy one minute, but the next song opens with backwards piano loops.' I want them to feel like they're constantly being caught off-guard." It's that unpredictability, that swing between light and dark, calm and catastrophe, that makes Lushes so alluring and their music so riveting.

Ai Aso - Lone (2014)

Ai Aso - Lone MP3/mirror / FLAC

Achingly fragile, sublime folksong from Tokyo's Ai Aso - an occasional collaborator with Boris, and White Heaven members You Ishihara and Michio Kurihara. Somewhat of an about-turn for Stephen O'Malley's notoriously heavy Ideologic Organ label, 'Lone' showcases Ai's exquisite, "whisper-thin acid folk" voice in a live setting at Daikanyama UNIT, Tokyo 3rd November 2012. Her performance is nothing short of captivating, accompanied by keyboard and guitar, she glides sylph like thru a suite of seven songs, each seemingly on the verge of evaporation yet delivered with an unwavering confidence that's almost stoic in its clinical execution and perfection. We're most drawn to the magical atmospheres of standout 'Date' with its plinky, plaintive keyboard coda, and the floating chords of 'Most Children Do'.

Ekoplekz - Live At Dubloaded (2011,2014)

Ekoplekz - Live At Dubloaded MP3

Wicked slab of avant-Dub doings by Ekoplekz, captured last year at his debut live set for Bristol's Dubloaded. The entire 45-minute set is spread over two sides, no gaps or nuthing. Much like charming platters for Mordant Music and Punch Drunk, all the music is improvised, deploying an array of cheap effects units and synths to create something quite deliciously spaced-out, lo-fi and inimitably intuitive. In other hands this could be boring, but Ekoplekz is constantly tweaking, folding and nudging his sounds into ever more alien arrangements, doing away with beats to allow the pulses of the synths to keep rhythm while he renders their shapes into arcing star bursts and wonderfully bloopy atmospheres. For our money it's one of the best bits he's released yet. It sounds more like Sun Araw meets Carlos Giffoni than anything strickly dub-related.

The Go Find - Brand New Love (2014)

The Go Find - Brand New Love MP3 / FLAC

The Go Find's Dieter Sermeus had his formula figured out when he started the band in 2004. Namely, take sad, sweet pop songs, add electronics, shake gently, and serve warm. It's served them well, especially on 2011's excellent album Everybody Knows It's Gonna Happen Only Not Tonight, where his songwriting took a big jump and he started crafting really affecting melodies that lingered in the listener's mind long after the album was done. He's done something similar on the band's fourth album, 2014's Brand New Love, only this time he adds some classic synth pop touches and a healthy dose of smooth soft rock textures into the mix. As to the former, the record is made up of washes of vintage keys, bubbling rhythm sequences, and warm pads that surround Sermeus' tender vocals with a smooth embrace. The soft rock influence comes out in tracks like "The Lobby" and "Japan," where the song structures and arrangements seem like they are on loan from Toto or Steely Dan, and Sermeus' smooth-as-glass croon floats through the mix like ice cubes in a cocktail. The small upgrade in sound proves to be a nice lateral move that keeps the album from sounding exactly like part two of Everybody Knows, but also doesn't jump so far ahead that it leaves behind the many pleasures of that album. There are even some very nice surprises like "On the Rebound," which features a lovely female vocal and some melancholy pedal steel guitar keening in the distance, and the almost disco-ish pulse of one of the record's most immediate songs, "Jungle Heart." Adding up the new sounds, the slight left turns, and the emotional power of the sneakily catchy modern pop songs that make up the bulk of the album, it's easy to come to the conclusion that Brand New Love is the Go Find's finest album. Considering how good the first three were, that's saying something.

Echaskech - Origin (2014)

Echaskech - Origin MP3 / FLAC

Signed to Just Music alongside artists and alumni such as Jon Hopkins, Marconi Union, Leo Abrahams, Laki Mera and Digitonal, Echaskech present a unique take on electronic music. The Hackney based duo (Dom Hoare & Andy Gillham) have surrounded themselves with an enviable array of electronic and acoustic equipment, experimenting for nearly 10 years under the name of Echaskech. During this time they've gorged on a mind boggling vista of sounds from classical to electro, rave through to drum and bass, IDM, ambient, house, techno and bass music. Echaskech flirt with these multiple influences combining them into a unique, compelling amalgamation - a sound at times delicate and melancholic, at others epic and uplifting. They have collaborated, remixed and worked with the likes of Max Cooper, Jon Hopkins, James Yuill, Roots Manuva and Kraddy. On 'Origin', their third album for Just Music, they have introduced new sonic sources including analogue hardware, live percussion, field recordings, piano plus bass and acoustic guitar – all underpinned with good old fashioned software synthesis and sound design. 'Origin' was created to be otherworldly yet organic in theme, to conjure up images of distant places alongside themes of exploration and habitation of new worlds. The results straddle multiple genres with a sound that refuses to be easily defined in general terms yet retains a distinct epic and melodic slant. At times it bristles with clarity, at others fizzes with warmth. Shiny, strident percussion accompanies atmospheric catchy hooks whilst tunes such as 'Anomie', 'Scanners' and 'Paper Scissors' mutate and twist delivering unexpected turns of mood as they progress. Overall, it's an album of multi-faceted and varied hues - melodic, epic, cerebral (yet never overly obscure or complex) with a thoroughly unique and original mixture of musical styles. In the live environment they team up with visual artist Mach V, syncing visuals to audio as accompaniment which has seen performances including Secret Garden Party, Blissfields, The Big Chill, Solfest and Glade, Corsica Studios and numerous underground warehouse parties. Such is the strength of their onstage show that they are (for better or worse) repeatedly compared to heavyweight stadium acts, earning themselves a nomination for UK Festival Awards Critics' Choice Award in 2010. "Echaskech may sound lush and atmospheric but this is ambience with teeth - as a live proposition, Echaskech toughen up into a true armoured dance animal with crunching beats and vicious synth snipes as standard...with the addition of Mach V (visuals) Echaskech become a truely immersive audio-visual experience where melody and groove are prime directives."

Stefan Jaworzyn - Drained Of Connotation (2014)

Stefan Jaworzyn - Drained Of Connotation MP3 / FLAC

Blackest Ever Black vent a cold slice of 1982 synth improvisations by former Skullflower and Whitehouse member Stefan Jaworzyn. The original tracks on 'Drained Of Connotation' were recently re-discovered by Jaworzyn when trawling his archives for the recent run of Skullflower reissues and rekindled the British noise legend's memories of poking about with his "beloved Dr Rhythm" and Korg MS10 or 20 and an old EMS. Pre-dating the music on his recently issued 'Eaten By Shadows '82-'83' CD, it comprises an extended side of crisp, piercing hi-end tones punctured by pulsing patterns on the front, whilst the flipside breaks down to five jagged, atonal experiments each as crude and compellingly malformed as the last. If you're into the likes of Pete Swanson, Container, Frak etc, you'd do well to drop in on this strong set.

Woo is brothers Mark and Clive Ives. Emboldened by the success of the recent reissue of Its Cosy Inside, Mark and Clive had a listen to hundreds of previously unreleased tracks recorded in the '70s and '80s to assemble their first new record in two decades, When The Past Arrives. With comparisons to Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Animal Collective, Cluster, and Brian Eno, Woo's profile in the world of atemporal music has been growing for years. For the lucky few who know, like Fela, or Neu!, Woo has their own instantly recognizable vibrantly pulsing sound, a quiet sound of comfort and contentment. When The Past Arrives is a collection of deceptively airy jams, addictive, crystalline.

Cello + Laptop - Parallel Paths (2012)

Cello + Laptop - Parallel Paths FLAC/mirror

From Valencia, far from the official channels of the Spanish indie scene, Edu Comelles and Sara Galán have spent two years articulating a sound project that treads the path between two worlds. On the one hand, the resonances of the classical tradition embodied in the wood and strings of her cello, and on the other the field recordings and digital manipulations orchestrated from the laptop of Edu Comelles, an artist with plenty of experience in sound composition and recording.

After numerous concerts and two live recordings distributed through the netlabels Audiotalaia and Colección de Emociones, Cello+Laptop have just released their first physical album, “Parallel Paths”, through Envelope Collective, an exploration of the free spaces that exist between string music and the stealthiest, most minimalistic electronics. Edu and Sara have enclosed their mists of sound in five compositions exploring the limits between melody and ambient, between texture and singular timbre, drone and silence. Electroacoustic ambient music blends with motifs that are typical of the Neoclassical school, in fifty minutes of profound music that seems to evoke traces of a faded past. If names like 12k, Hildur Guðnadóttir, William Basinski, Touch, Lawrence English, Marcus Fjellström, Jacaszek, Leyland Kirby, Sonic Pieces and Miasmah say anything to you, you mustn’t overlook Cello+Laptop.

Orcas - Yearling (2014)

Orcas - Yearling MP3 / FLAC

For "Yearling" ORCAS members Benoît Pioulard and Rafael Anton Irisarri (The Sight Below) teamed up with Martyn Heyne (of Efterklang) on guitar and piano, and Michael Lerner (Telekinesis) on drums to built upon the subdued ambience of their self-titled debut, adding a huge dose of analog warmth to their hazy pop leanings. Whereas many songs on ORCAS' first album were built from guitar improvisations and impromptu vocal sessions, most of "Yearling" was constructed from short pieces Pioulard wrote and developed while staying in Germany during the summer of 2012. Working together at Heyne's Lichte Studio in Berlin and Irisarri's own Black Knoll Studio back in Seattle, they brought the album into full form over the course of the following year. Whether it's the soaring guitars of “Infinite Stillness”, the Lynchian otherworldliness of “Filament”, the echoes of Spirit of Eden-era Talk Talk on “Capillaries” or the slow-building tape loops of “Tell”, Yearling subsists on variation while holding a lyrical center. Pioulard muses on absence, presence, dedication and distance; there's an ode to geography (“Selah”) and a lamentation of discord (“An Absolute”).

The Hybrid Series was announced last year as a way to celebrate the label's 10th anniversary—a series of exclusive picture discs with 12-25 minutes of music from the label's past associates and friends. Releases so far have included music from Pye Corner Audio and Kemialliset Ystävät. Because picture discs mean lower-quality pressings, only one side of the 12-inches is illustrated, while the plain black side contains the audio.

First up, Volume 5, is a single-track release from Experimental Audio Research, an alias of Pete Kember AKA Sonic Boom, a founding member of Spacemen 3. Number six, The Stand, comes from Excepter, and the three tracks feature members Lala Harrison Ryan and John Fell Ryan's 18-month old son on vocals. Finally, Providence, a new EP from Dekorder founder Black To Comm, will complete the batch.

14 Tracks: Footwork/Jungle MP3

Chicago's Footwork scene has been a crucial catalyst behind some of the most forward dance music of recent times. Its influence has percolated far and wide, inspiring net-age mutants, knitted with European house, meshing with UK Jungle and providing impetus to electronica veterans. This selection charts 14 vital hybrids, quick-stepping from Traxman's fierce, technoid rework of Rabit to the Sino-tech fusion of Kode 9's 'Xingfu Lu' and the sci-fi drama of Om Unit's amazing 'Grey Skies Over Chicago'. We've included a few under-the-radar aces, including Dutchman, William Kouam Djoko's mystic tribalism 'Deflourished' along with the clinical execution of Mouse On Mars' 'Migmy' and the East London suss of Rushmore's '3000' tool which handily switches from 160bpm to 125bpm for the DJs looking to smoothly cross the tempo barrier, plus a strong handful of weapons exploring that compatible nexus between footwork fibrillation and jungle rufige.

Bibio - The Green EP (2014)

Bibio - The Green EP MP3 / FLAC

Bibio introduces the EP thus: "I wanted to do a follow up EP with ‘Dye The Water Green’ as it is my favourite track off Silver Wilkinson and I also have a lot of music in my archives that would complement the track well"

"‘Dinghy’ is an old track I recorded with Richard Roberts (now one half of Letherette) around 2006. We used to work in an old Victorian pub back in those times, and it was a regular thing that we'd stay behind for a lock-in after hours. It became the norm that we'd take in our guitars before starting work in the evening and then jam together after we kicked all the customers out. Around that time we recorded a lot of stuff together, some in the pub, some in the garden, some by a stream in the woods, some at home. A lot of it was done in a super lo-fi fashion with very old cassette recorders and cheap mics. This track was recorded in one take, straight to cassette. It was a time where we played together so much that our sense of rhythm was totally locked, in this track we seemed to respond to each other's timing really naturally. I've always loved this track, it brings back strong memories and is a real daydream track for me. This EP seemed like the perfect home for it as it ties in so well with the murky vignetted sound of ‘Dye The Water Green’".

"‘The Spinney View of Hinkley Point.’ is the first track I've released with live drums, as opposed to sampled and chopped on an MPC. I recorded the drums, guitar and bass parts in my friend's shed in rural Somerset (the same shed where the live trio session videos were filmed)".

"‘Carbon Wulf’ is of course a reprise of the album track 'Wulf'. This was just a straight, one-take improvisation on baritone guitar and a reverb pedal. I crushed the hell out of it with an analogue limiter which gave it this uneven fire-damaged sound."

"The other tracks were written some years ago, I rediscovered them while going through my archives and, again, heard them with fresh ears. I decided to revamp them, re-recording the vocal parts and adding more instruments."

'The Green' EP is set to be released on January 27th.

Inventions - Inventions (2014)

Inventions - Inventions MP3 / FLAC

Inventions is the new band formed by longtime friends, tourmates, and labelmates Matthew Cooper of Eluvium, and Mark T. Smith of Explosions In The Sky. It began in earnest in 2013 when Cooper invited Smith to collaborate on a song for Eluvium’s otherworldly double-album, Nightmare Ending. The track, “Envenom Mettle”, was a standout on an album full of them, and just like that a longstanding friendship blossomed into a full-fledged creative partnership. There are plenty of talking points here: The fact that Cooper hasn’t been in a “band” of any sort since he was a teenager; no member of Explosions In The Sky has released an album outside of the context of EITS since their inception in the late 90s; and, of course, this is a dream duo for anyone familiar with the unparalleled emotional resonance of Cooper and Smith’s respective day jobs. However, thirty seconds into their eponymous debut album, you realize that the esteemed pedigree is irrelevant. Inventions exceeds all expectations by discarding them from the get-go. They have created their own tiny, wondrous corner of the world, one with ever-changing sounds and colors.

Tobacco - Ultima II Massage (2014)

Tobacco - Ultima II Massage MP3 / FLAC

Electronic musician Thomas Fec began working on the third album as TOBACCO almost immediately after releasing 2010′s Maniac Meat. Simultaneously, he’s indulged in other projects, including a new album with Black Moth Super Rainbow (Cobra Juicy) and producing Demon Queen’s Exorcise Tape. Now, after four long years, Fec will finally release Ultima II Massage on May 13th via Ghostly.
In a press release, Fec explains why the 16-track album took so long to assemble:
“I spent a lot of time breaking it in all the right places. It ends up making the whole thing breathe – sometimes gasp for air. It feels more alive. I wanted to push each song just enough, so that even when the album’s at its wildest, it’s something you can zone out to. It feels like a definitive end to a concept I’ve been trying to perfect forever. Maniac Meat was linear. This time I wanted to do a lot of different things and have them come together as one meditative piece. At least for myself.”
For a taste of the self-described “Frankenstein” album, Fec has unveiled “Eruption (Gonna Get My Hair Cut at the End of the Summer)”. It’s your basic slice of groovy dance-pop, optimal for underground discotheque’s or all-night raves. Only, replace bubbly harmonies for the empty emotion of robotic vocals and feel-good vibes for an impending sense of terror and doom. You’ll dance, you’ll worry, and you’ll enjoy every second of it.

Dillon - The Unknown (2014)

Dillon - The Unknown MP3FLAC

First a roar steadily builds, then we hear the first piano tone of The Unknown - along with the voice of Dominique Dillon de Byington. There it is again, the unique timbre of the young Berlin-based artist who captivated the music press and arts critics alike with her 2011 debut album on BPitch Control This Silence Kills.
With songs like Tip Tapping , Thirteen Thirtyfive and You Are My Winter Dillon, originally from Brazil, left an impression on more than just the indie scene. This Silence Kills was sweet and enticing enough to establish itself as a pop record with singer-songwriter passion and experimental enough to be taken seriously as an art project. It was described as chanson-pop, sensuous electronic music featuring a voice comparable to Feist, Björk or Joanna Newsom. There followed two sold-out tours and numerous festival gigs all over the world a life on the road. For Dillon this was completely unexplored territory. The Unknown is not only the first song she wrote for her eponymous second album, it is how Dillon evokes that thing in life that has no name, no description no boundaries. The Unknown can be anything: longing, love, loss, transience, fear or desire. In keeping with the cover art for The Unknown the twelve new tracks have a more direct, natural and candid feel: The lyrics are a lot more abstract and open, although they are just as personal and introverted, says Dillon about the songs she wrote between May and November 2013. Tracks like In Silence and 4ever are sometimes pensive, they exude this profound contemplation which must not always be characterised as melancholy. Whereas the majority of the debut album, with all its melodies and arrangements, had been written before it was recorded, The Unknown came about more as a conceptual work. Yet despite the new approach, it should still be understood as a sequel to The Silence Kills. The foundation for album number two was laid within three weeks at the same studio and even in the same room of Clouds Hill Recordings in Hamburg. Once more she worked with Thies ynther (Phantom/Ghost) and Tamer Fahri Özgönenc (MIT): I didn't see any sense in working with someone else. Back then we began a dialogue that, in my eyes, was never concluded.

Federico Albanese - The Houseboat and the Moon (2014)

Federico Albanese - The Houseboat and the Moon MP3 / FLAC

Federico Albanese is a composer born in Milan, Italy in 1982, and currently based in Berlin. His musical versatility is a natural gift that pushes him to explore music in all its facets. Albanese's compositions are airy and cinematic, blending classical music, electronics and psychedelia. Federico started studying piano and clarinet as a child before becoming fascinated by rock music. As a teenager he studied bass and became a self-taught guitarist and soon became one of the leading figures of Milan's underground scene, performing in several bands. Influenced by black music, folk, electronic, modern and contemporary classical music his skills as a composer soon emerged. He worked for 5 years as prop man in several film sets. This experience made him understand the power of the connection between music and images and helped him to develop his personal musical path.

In 2007 Albanese met singer and songwriter Jessica Einaudi and together they founded the avant-garde duo "La Blanche Alchimie". Composing songs with Jessica he rediscovered his love for the piano, which from that moment on, became his main instrument. Since then Federico has scored several films, short films and documentaries, including a documentary on a project commissioned by Ermenegildo Zegna in the National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome.

In February 2014, Federico Albanese will release his debut album entitled "The Houseboat and the Moon". He found a place, an imaginary place, where, whenever he wanted to, he could jump on and just float away. On this moving shelter, traveling across memories and imagination, lulled by water and led by the moon, Federico wrote the 13 compositions of his debut. He recorded all of the piano parts with a 1969 German tape recorder, the Uher Royal Deluxe, which allowed him to catch all of the tiny hidden shades, the imperfections, the noises of the piano and its surrounding space. Federico melts this rarefied sound with electronics, live recordings, strings, and homemade instruments. The result is a combination of contrasts and colors with a variety of atmospheres that wonderfully represents Federico's musical universe.

Millions - Discrete Music (2014)

Millions - Discrete Music MP3

Space is lonely. Drifting along with nothing but radio static in your helmet, the meaning of the word lost takes on new proportions. Glaciers become highways of impermanence where we're always connected, drifting around tonal peaks that echo throughout the night sky. Immersive structures unfold from the minutiae and build beacons to break up the endless stream. Solitude is available for the taking if you look. There can be too much and sometimes it pays to check out.
